News: Zigman’s ‘Émigré’ oratorio, about Jews who fled Nazis for Shanghai, has US premiere

Performed by New York Philharmonic, Émigré evokes a World War II-era sound reminiscent of Rodgers and Hammerstein; organizers hope joint project can ease US-China ties

Émigré is an oratorio by Aaron Zigman about Jews who fled Nazi Germany for Shanghai in the 1940s. It had its US premiere by the New York Philharmonic in 2022. The oratorio tells a fictional story but is based on the true history of 20,000-30,000 Jews who found refuge in Shanghai during this time period. Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Émigré explores the experiences of Jewish refugees and themes of migration, cultural exchange, and understanding between different communities. An especially moving part of the oratorio is the song “Forever” in which the characters Otto and Lina, who have secretly married, walk down separate aisles and meet in the middle during a choral backdrop.
