Registration for the 2026 Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in Israel opened on 1 July and closes 22 July 2026. The exam itself will be held on Sunday, 6 December 2026, in the afternoon, at Merkaz Amit, 2 Asher Barash St, Tel Aviv. Registration is run by the Israeli Association of Japanese Studies, based at the University of Haifa’s Department of Asian Studies.
Why it matters#
The JLPT is the standard international benchmark for Japanese proficiency — the certificate that Japanese-language jobs, university programs, and some visa applications ask for. For anyone studying Japanese in Israel, whether through the Japan Studies Center, a university program, or self-study, this is the only in-country sitting of the test all year.
Levels and format#
Examinees choose one of five levels, from N5 (easiest) to N1 (most difficult). The exam tests kanji and vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension, entirely via multiple-choice questions. A detailed level breakdown and an official test guide (English and Japanese) are available on the registration site.
